It’s certainly getting dark, and it’s already been an hour, so you might want to check in on that table you put your name down for. That rumbling in your stomach? Right, it doesn’t exactly disappear. The problem, of course, is when the sun does fully dip beyond the horizon of the Delaware Bay. Take your sandals off, take some photos, hell-even bring a couple beach chairs because you’ll have nothing but time on your hands to enjoy one of the natural world’s simplest pleasures. Don’t wait by the phone! Instead, bypass local ordinances for public alcohol consumption and walk across sandy Beach Drive with your adult beverage and catch a glimpse of the impending setting sun. The hostess will “text” you when (really if) your table ever becomes available. I recommend grabbing a drink at the back bar or two, maybe even three if you have any reasonable expectation of being able to pass the time waiting to sit down at your table on a Friday evening. Parking might be free for patrons, but that’s where the value ends should you choose to venture to Harpoon’s from near or far. I am now convinced that the astronomical phenomenon of sunset is the singular reason Harpoon’s on the Bay in West Cape May, New Jersey is still conducting business. May, this establishment would not survive a mere six weeks when compared to other local eating venues serving similar fare. For it not being located on perhaps the most scenic parcel of commercial real estate in the small community of West Cape. There are very few occasions in one’s travels where the wanderer feels compelled to inform the general population of a lived-in dining calamity.
